The Graz Theatre Extension - in progress 2007 09 23

SLMDT performance group will be curating a First Life/Second Life event that will be held in Graz, Austria on the 23 september 2007. The group was assigned the main theatre stage of the Steirischer Herbst arts festival, but has broken out of the black box limitations of the theatre space and is going to span over four sims in second life and four continents in Real life.

One second life island and one real life position will be connected through a second life interface. Through the interface, first life and second life will meet through dialogue and live streams. The four simultaneous meetings of first life graz with the four sims in second life will be neatly tied together into a special installation inside of the theatre.

The piece will be a multitude of meetings between the virtual and the real. A large choreography of events that only can be experienced as fragmented space.

1.

When teleporting themselves to one of the four islands in second life, the avatars will land in a theatre foyer. The foyer space will be an open platform for interactions and meetings. In the space, random words will be placed that anyone can touch. In the very heart of the foyer a teleport is located. The teleport connects to an autonomous black box hovering in the air above. One avatar at a time will be able to teleport themselves into that space. The autonomous black space consists of one live stream and random words appearing (sent by the avatars in the foyer below). The real life performer, seen on the live video stream, has recieved a protocol and will use that as a framework for a dialogue with the avatars that enter the space.

2.

Four laptops with webcams and a real life performer (with a protocol) are located in four different countries. The real life performer will be connected to Second Life and streamed live into one of the four theatre boxes on one of the four islands in second life.

3.

The Second Life Avatar and the real Life performer will converse through chat. The Second Life avatar will see the live stream of the real life performer inside the black space, but the real life performer will not be able to see the Second Life avatar.

4.

Four projections from the four different black box spaces in Second Life; each containing a live stream of a real life performer, an avatar and the two individuals private consversation. All this will be tied together into ONE room inside The Theatre in Graz.
